Solomon Islands to issue new $5 Polymer Banknote

The Central Bank of Solomon Islands has announced the date to officially launch the country’s new $5 polymer note as legal tender in the Solomon Islands. The date for launch was made at a currency conference in Dubai while unveiling the designs of the new $5 polymer banknote on 10th April. The launch is to be held on 2nd of May 2019 in conjunction with the United Nations World Tuna Day.

To denote the importance of sustainability the design features a yellowfin tuna and a traditional fishing hook on the front of the note. A traditional spearfishing scene that highlights the need to preserve and promote community activity as we move into the future is depicted on the reverse side.  Focus is given on creating a sustainable and responsible fishing industry to provide long-term economic security for the nation, as well as the importance of community and social cohesion for the theme of the new $5 note. The commercial banks will issue the new $5 polymer note into circulation to the public on the day it is launched.
