On October 12, 2017, the Bank of Russia enters into circulation new banknotes with a par value of 200 and 2000 rubles, symbols for which were chosen following the results of the nationwide voting. In banknotes the advanced protective complex and elements with the raised relief for visually impaired citizens are used, and also tendencies of modern design are considered.
On a 200 ruble note , the main color of which is green, symbols of Sevastopol are placed: on the front side there is an image of the Monument to the Scuttled Ships, on the reverse side – a view of Tauric Chersonesos. This banknote is printed on high-density cotton paper with polymeric impregnation, which will ensure its high wear resistance and extend the lifetime in circulation.
The banknote in face value of 2000 rubles is executed mainly in dark blue color. On its front side is a bridge to the Russian Island, on the reverse side – the spaceport “Vostochny” in the Amur region. The optically variable security element is made in the form of a stylized image of a bridge against the background of the sun.
The image ₽ (symbol of the ruble) on new banknotes appears in several places: on a security thread, in microimages. The nominal values are larger than on other banknote banknotes, and have a tangible relief. This is made especially for people with impaired vision to recognize the face value. On both banknotes there is a coat of arms of the Russian Federation. On the front side of each banknote there is a QR code containing a link to the Bank of Russia page with detailed information on decoration and security features.
Symbols for new banknotes were selected during the contest in 2016. Of the more than 5,000 applications, 76 proposals with a variety of attractions from 49 regions entered the interim list of the competition. According to the results of the all-Russian sociological survey, 10 finalists were selected from this list. At the last stage of the contest, voting across the country, in which over 3 million people took part, winners were identified – symbols of the Far East and Sevastopol. The results of the contest were announced on October 7, 2016, on the air of the TV channel “Russia 1”.
