The issue of a polymer banknote of Rs 2000 on 5th of December was announced by the Bank of Mauritius. This is an upgraded version of the existing Rs 2000 paper banknotes. The paper note will be legal tender till the 1st of February 2019. Till 31st of January 2019, the old 2000 paper note can be exchanged at any commercial bank or branch. Those exchanging the notes are requested to provide a identity proof. Regarding payment in cash, the statutory limit is set at Rs 500,000. The bank will closely monitor the split transactions also. Any counterfeit note will be reported to the police.
