Japan to redesign 10,000, 5,000, 1,000 yen banknotes in 2024.

In 2024, Japan will introduce new 10,000 yen, 5000 yen and 1000 yen banknotes with anti-counterfeiting features said the government. Industrialist Eiichi Shibusawa, educator Umeko Tsuda and physician and bacteriologist Shibasaburo Kitasato are featured in the banknotes. Tokyo station’s red brick Marunouchi building, Wisteria flowers and  “The great wave of Kanagawa” from the “Thirty-six views of Mount Fuji” series by famed ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai can be seen on the backside of the bill. As Japan is to enter into the period of Reiwa era with the Crown Prince Naruhito ascending the throne on May 1st following his father emperor Akihito’s abdication, the announcement of the new banknotes was made .

On the first half of fiscal 2024, the new bills will be circulated and on the first half of fiscal 2021, 500 yen coin with new materials will be circulating. Tsuda is a pioneer in education for women in the country who established the Tsuda university in Tokyo. Kitasato discovered the infectious agent responsible for the bubonic plague. On the 10,000 yen bill educator Yukichi Fukuzawa, on the 5000 yen bill Meiji- era novelist Ichiyo Higuchi and on the 1000 yen bill microbiologist Hideyo Noguchi are featured.
