India Announces New Rs. 20 Coin With A One-Of-A-Kind Shape.

On Thursday, March 7, Prime Minister Modi unveiled the new series of visually impaired friendly, coins of various denominations like Re.1, Rs.2, Rs.5, Rs.10 and Rs.20 at an event held at Lok Kalyan Marg, New Delhi. Visually impaired children were specially invited for this event. The new series coins will be issued for circulation only through Reserve Bank with the vision of reaching the last mile and the last person.

The first ever 12 edged polygon coin (Rs.20) has a design of grains to indicate the agricultural dominance of the nation. The new series coins other than Rs.20 increases in size and weight according to the various denominations, are round in shape.

The PTI report states that the new series coins are forged at state-owned mints at Mumbai, Alipore (Kolkata), Saifabad (Hyderabad) Cherlapally (Hyderabad) and Noida (U.P). The written denominations will be in Hindi script. The exact date of issuance of the new series coins is not yet announced.

  • It is wonderful, I remember when the old Indian coins were so distinct. I am glad they are supporting visually impaired people again.
