As part of celebrations for 25 years of democracy, the South Africa Mint in partnership with South Africa Reserve Bank (SARB), launched on Wednesday a series of six new commemorative circulation coins. It is part of the coin series named ‘SA25 – Celebrating South Africa’. The series includes five new R2 circulation coins that depict five different rights in the Bill of Rights.
The R5 coin features the design of a ballot box and a long queue, suggestive of South Africa’s first democratic elections. The design concepts were developed on the views of the public on matters like democracy, freedom, and culture.
The rest of the series includes an R50 bronze alloy coin featuring two interlocking hands for unity, joined together in the shape of a cross. The R 50 sterling silver has the image of long voting queues associated with the first democratic election. This also includes an R500 gold coin that illustrates the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
