China issues new commemorative banknotes

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, it is going to issue commemorative banknotes in the second half of 2019. Bank of China and Banco Nacional Ultramarino (two private banks) are going to issue 5 million 20 patacas notes. A maximum of 10 notes can be exchanged by every Macao resident. To symbolize the prosperity of Macao a bronze sculpture “Lotus Flower in full bloom” is featured on the obverse side. It also features the issuing Banks headquarters building and an image of Macao coast. On the reverse side, the 34- mile Hong Kong-Zhuhai- Macao bridge is shown. Old districts of Macao are also shown in the background. Macao became an autonomous part of the People’s Republic of  China in 1999 after being a sovereign state under Portugal.
