The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) today announced that the circulation of the whole series of New Generation Currency (NGC) coins consisting of 10-Piso, 5-Piso, 1-Piso, 25-Cents, 5-Cent , and 1-cent.
The new design and details of NGC Coins will provide a better look and better security of coins. Particularly here is the placement of micro-printed details using laser-engraving technology in the two highest denominations (10-Piso and 5-Piso) so it’s not easy to apply with the traditional counterfeit process. The metallic composition of NGC coins has been modified to prevent illegal digestion and recovery of its precious metals.
NGC coins, colored with “metallic silver”, are made of solid nickel-plated steel. Replacement of the material is the answer to the twin fly and the blackness often seen in copper-based metals.
NGC Coin Series features the new BSP logo; valiant heroes (Apolinario Mabini in 10-Piso, Andres Bonifacio in 5-Piso, and Jose Rizal in 1-Piso); the stylized Philippine flag found at 25-Cent, 5-cent and 1-cent; and endemic flora or natural plants found in our country. This is in line with NGC Banknote Series design featuring Philippine fauna.
The difference between NGC coins and the BSP Coin Series that is currently in circulation will be more familiar with the careful look and elaboration of its details.
The BSP Coin Series can still be used in conjunction with the NGC Coin Series in daily transactions, until the BSP decides “demonetization” or expiration of old coins.
