The Bank of Canada is planning to release a new $5 note and is seeking public opinion to decide who will be featured on it. It is similar to the consultations that led to the selection of Viola Desmond for the $10 note.
The current $5 note in circulation has Sir Wilfred Laurier. Canada’s first francophone Prime Minister featured on it. The Governor of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade says that they will ask the public to nominate any historic Canadian that’s ‘truly banknote-able.’
The Governor urged the Canadians to stay tuned for more information.
Desmon, a Nova Scotia civil right pioneer, was selected by the public to appear on the $10 bill. The $10 bill is the only Canadian note using a vertical design.
