The Bank of Albania introduced the new series of Albania banknotes on September 12, 2019. The current series of Lek banknotes was released 20 years ago which makes the new series even more special.
The design of the new series is refreshing and modern. The high-quality banknotes are made durable with the state-of-the-art technology with new security features against counterfeiting. The theme of the existing series is still the same. The new notes have their new and refreshed look.
The new themes cover the milestones in the nation’s history, social, economic, and political highlights and distinguished personalities with outstanding contributions to Albania.
The existing banknotes will continue to be in circulation until further notice. The new series of banknotes consists of six denominations: the existing 200, 500, 1000, 2000, and 5000 Leke and the new denomination 10000 Leke and will be introduced into circulation from this year onwards.
The 200 and 5000 Leke notes will be available to the public on September 30, 2019. The circulation timeline for the banknotes are as follows:
- 200 Leke and 5000 Leke from September 30, 2019.
- 10000 Leke and 1000 Leke from 2020.
- 2000 Leke from 2021.
- 500 Leke from 2022.
